THE YESTER-DAYS
Over the years numerous projects have played a vital part in Brussels regeneration drive and OPO Hotel’s edifice is no exception. The former retail store / post office -turned hotel has had her fair share of faces since 1880.
In its heydays the building housed the primary store of the “à la Vierge Noire” retail outlets, with all the workshops and warehouses located on the top floors. In the 50s these top floors got turned into multiple housing units, prematurely paving the way for what is today the hotel structure. The following decade the first floor and part of the groundfloor got partitioned to house the administrative offices of our national postal services, a uniform outlet, and a café-brasserie. In 1973 the state purchased the building and crowned the building cultural heritage in 1989. Finally in 1985 a group of visionary entrepreneurs purchased the building and successfully initiated the drive of what is today the largest Asian supermarket in Belgium.
TODAY
Our “quartier” has undergone numerous regeneration projects, becoming the cachet of Brussel’s cool, loaded with pop-up eateries, boutiques, and cocktail bars. Here you’ll find a rich multicultural metropolis where creative proud Brusselaars effortlessly switch languages, whilst engaging in a unique and diverse urban mosaic, harmoniously accentuated by modern day Chinese settlers with a mix of Vietnamese and Indonesian nationals. The vibrant Sainte Catherine is a must-see area of Brussels — a well-suited match of old style and new vibes. ✣✣✣ |

Located just a few steps from the hotel, in an area where the ancient harbour of Brussel was located, has characterised itself to become a paradise for seafood lovers and for those who are looking for a lively and alternative spot in the heart of Europe’s capital. Our beloved ♡Place Sainte-Catherine, formerly referred to as the Vismet, aka the fish market, played an important role in supplying the Brusselaars with fresh fish and seafood. Ancient docks where skilfully transformed into a square with beautiful water features, where remnants of the past are still very visible. ✣✣✣ |

♨︎ The fishermen are gone, the docks are gone, but fish and seafood still preserve the origins of it all, matter of fact it still reigns supreme on the menus at the restaurants in the area – the best ones in the city. |
